On Trend and On Budget

How to try 2018’s hottest trends without spending a fortune!

Ice Cream Hues

Ice cream colours are going to be a huge trend in both fashion and interiors this year. I’m talking pistachio greens, bubblegum blues, lemon yellows, strawberry pinks. This year it is all about mixing and matching pastels to create the illusion of a soft but bold appearance. The trick to pulling off this look is keeping a neutral backdrop and accessorising with ice cream hues. This way of decorating is also far more practical – painting/wallpapering every time a different colour becomes fashionable is not realistic or affordable!

Like the fashion world, interior design has welcomed the return of velvet this year. Yet this time it has resurfaced completely differently. Its traditional and elaborate reputation has had a contemporary renovation. Our top tip for achieving the modern velvet look is to banish dark and rich shades and mix light and bright colours instead.

Shop: The Velvet Crush trend at H&M Home. Pillows (left & right images) from £6.99. They have a wide range of colours to choose from.

The humble houseplant has become one of the must-have buys for our interiors over the years. Not only do they have great health benefits, they also add life and texture to any room in your home. This year, it’s the more the merrier – use hanging plants for shelves and statement flowers for coffee tables.

The desire for geometric patterned accessories has been on the up for years, but this year the trend has escalated and seems to be here to stay. Walls, floors and furniture seem to be following following the geometric trend and dominating interiors everywhere. This doesn’t mean you have to break the bank trying to get the look! Our top tip for adding a dash of geometric print to your home is to choose a geometric wallpaper and create a feature wall.

Shop: Cole & Son Geometric II collection wallpapers: Apex Grand (SKU: 105/10045) £100 (top image), Deco Palm (SKU: 105/8036) £85 (left image), Delano (SKU: 105/7033) £85 (right image) – all available at Walls4U.

Although metallic is not a new trend, the finish of it is the difference this year. It’s all about the brass! The most effective way to use brass metallic is in small doses – don’t overdo it. Accessories such as mirrors, frames and lighting are the right way to go about injecting the perfect balance of metallic into your home.

Palm Print

A trend not going anywhere anytime soon is the mighty palm print. Last year we saw both fashion and interiors following the trend of vivid green, pink and blue tropical prints. However, this year the trend has gone green – replace your carnival colours for luscious green palm leaves. Feature the print in your home with an accent wall mural or some poster prints!
